the Contractor of the Year Award 2002
By the American Subcontractors Association
of New Jersey
John
O’Hara
Company, Inc. is a full-
service general contracting and construction management
firm that has provided quality
craftsmanship for more than 80 years and through three
generations of the O’Hara family.
The company was
established in 1920 by John O’Hara, the father of Chairman of the Board
James O’Hara and grandfather of President and chief
operating officer, John M. O’Hara. The firm has grown
over the past three-quarters of a century. The dedication
to quality demonstrated by its founder has been passed
from father to son, and is the cornerstone on which the
John O’Hara Company has been built.
One of the things
that has made the John OHara Company a leader amongst general
contracting
firms for more than 80 years, is its philosophy of not
just constructing buildings and interior spaces, but building
long-term relationships with its clients. This is evidenced
by the fact that each year, more than 50% of the firm’s
work is for repeat clients.
The John O’Hara Co. is proud
of its long and successful association with organizations
like the Newark Museum was it has the opportunity to showcase
its extraordinary craftsmanship and care in the construction
process. From the landmark Ballantine House to the new
Science Exhibit Hall, John O’Hara Company has a showcase
for the depth and breath of its expertise.
John O’Hara Company has also
developed long and lasting relationships with the trade
contractor community by adhering to the principles of fair
play and mutual respect. The O’Hara family realized
long ago that the only way to build a strong bond with
its clients was by building an even stronger bond with
the trade contractors that they call upon to bid and execute
their projects. The ideas of “team effort” and “team
goals” are not just empty slogans but a firm commitment
that expects everyone to do their best work and to in turn
be treated as partners in the enterprise not as disposable
pieces.
The Company is experienced in a variety of new construction,
addition and alteration work, with proven expertise in
all types of buildings. Examples of the quality
of O’Hara’s exacting, high-performance work is its ability to build
museum facilities, telecommunication centers, hospital wings, school facilities
and high end and high traffic retail space as well as office spaces for numerous
industrial and commercial clients throughout the northeast.
The term “museum quality work” is
an apt description of the high quality workmanship that
John OHara Co. brings to its projects. The firm always
strives to know and understand the unique needs of each
of its clients and to execute its work the highest quality
possible.
John OHara Co.’s top executives
are “hands-on” constructors who know the construction
process inside and out. The company’s superintendents
are skilled craftsmen who have worked their way up through
the trade ranks, bringing years of experience to their
positions. In fact, the average number of years of employment
with John OHara Co. for project managers is 16 and 75%
of O’Hara’s superintendents have been with
the firm for 25 years or more. While these figures seem
unbelievable in today’s climate of quick personnel
changeover, they serve to illustrate the company’s
belief that by surrounding with the best people, the firm
can provide the best product for its clients.
